To uphold the utmost standards of safe, quality care in the home, we conduct quality assurance surveys and invite all our clients to participate and complete a client satisfaction survey so we can identify areas where we can improve our services. All responses are handled with the utmost confidentiality.

The survey for January 2024 has been distributed to all our clients receiving home care services from Novus Care. The results tell a very positive story of our home care service and can be viewed below:

Client Satisfaction Survey Results Jan 2024

There are five key questions the Care Quality Commission asks of all home care services which we have used for this survey which are as follows and are an integral part of our aims and objectives to ensure we are continually providing high quality care in the home.

  • Are they effective?
  • Are they caring?
  • Are they responsive to people’s needs?
  • Are they well-led?

In the coming months, we will craft action plans based on client’s feedback and the survey findings. These plans will undergo regular review to ensure continuous improvement as we are dedicated to refining and enhancing our quality assurance systems to deliver home care services of the highest standard.

Mo is 88 years young and lives in Hullbridge, Essex and we have been providing visiting care to him in his own home for over 2 years. As with a lot of families across the UK, his family live far away and are unable to visit him regularly. It has been a difficult few months for Mo as his health is declining, which he is struggling to come to terms with.

His family wanted to invite him to one of their concerts as Mo’s daughter and son-in-law play in an orchestra band called “Five Star Swing”. Although they wanted Mo to come they thought it would be nice for Audrey, his main carer to attend with him. So both our Registered Manager Louise and Deputy Manager Kirsty attended along with Audrey who is Mo’s main carer. Mo has been finding it difficult to come to terms with his Dementia and reduced mobility; he rarely goes out with his friend Ray now and can become quite frustrated with himself.

Upon seeing his family perform on stage, he was visibly excited and enjoying himself singing and dancing along. Mo was so proud and loved watching his daughter and son-in-law perform. At Novus Care, we understand for those living with Dementia – music can help people improve their wellbeing, reduce agitation and can act as a prompt for reminiscing. His family said ‘It was like all his Dementia went away at that moment’.

We cannot wait to see Mo singing and dancing at the next concert!

Looking for care in the home?

At Novus Care, our home care services let you live the life you want and a carer can make all the difference to someone’s life. From just popping in once day to ensure all is well to live-in care. We can even accompany you or a loved one to a family event or even concerts like we did for Mo!

Meet David…

David has been a Novus Care client since April 2023 and is living with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus, resulting in some learning difficulties. However, with the dedicated around the clock care and support of his live in carer Faith by his side, David’s life has undergone significant positive changes.

Faith has become an integral part of David’s social life, enhancing it in numerous ways other than being his carer. They share a common love for the local football team, attending matches together regularly. Additionally, Faith accompanies David to church every week, contributing to his spiritual well-being.

The bond between David and Faith extends beyond leisure activities. They engage in quality time together, cooking meals and enjoying friendly games of scrabble. Faith’s commitment goes further as she assists David in navigating the digital world. Given David’s partial deafness, Faith has been instrumental in helping him learn new computer skills and check emails.

Faith’s dedication shines through in her efforts to facilitate David’s online communication with friends. Recognising her exceptional commitment, Faith was nominated as the Carer of the Month by both David’s mother and his social worker.

Faith’s unwavering care and support has not only improved David’s social life but has also empowered him to overcome challenges in communication and technology. Her dedication and compassionate care earned her the well-deserved Carer of the Month award for January.

We are extremely proud of everyone and we are delighted to announce the following members of staff have been awarded our employees of the month;

Congratulations Audrey
Community Carer of the Month

Congratulations to Audrey who has won our Community Carer of the Month. Audrey only joined the company recently but what a difference she has already made! She has shown great dedication to her role as a Carer and has built some amazing relationships with her clients – they all love her. Audrey was nominated by her clients following many compliments about the care that she delivers. Audrey always turns up to work promptly with a huge smile on her face. She thrives in showing her clients compassion and high quality care. Well done Audrey!

Congratulations Mary
Office Employee of the Month

A huge congratulations to Mary who has won this award for truly going above and beyond to support with assessing new client’s needs, building open and honest relationships with them and their families. Mary recently had to cancel her own plans to travel to an assessment. She worked around the clock to attend the assessment, and then to ensure there is a detailed person-centred care and support plan in place. Mary then met with the carer going in and brought her personally to introduce the carer to the client. When there has been any teething problems with clients, Mary has gone out to support both the client and carer.

Mary is extremely hard working and dedicated and always puts the needs of the client and the carers before her own. Mary does this while also gaining more knowledge as she is undertaking her Level 5 QCF! You’re a superstar Mary. Well done!

Congratulations Sandy
Live in Carer of the Month

Sandy is the long-term live in carer for one of our clients at Novus Care. Her client had been refusing her medications continuously despite encouragement from her family and health staff. Sandy worked very hard to support her client, coming up with inventive ways to encourage her to take her medications on a daily basis, for example, Sandy takes her ‘medication’ (mint) at the same time. Sandy has been working so hard and as a result her client is now been taking all of their medications regularly. Sandy always ensures to keep us up to date with any changes to her client’s wellbeing and reports any concerns immediately so that they can be actioned in a prompt manner. Sandy provides a high level of care and support, keeping accurate records reflective of this. Well done, Sandy.

What to buy someone for Mother’s Day is always challenging however when you’re trying to buy gifts for people living with Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease – finding the right present can often be extremely daunting.

When choosing a present for a loved one living with Dementia, the right  gift can help them reminisce, soothe agitation, provide comfort, make their daily life easier or activities that stimulate their mind. Here we’ve collated our top gift ideas for those living with Dementia which we think make a real difference for those living with Dementia or Alzheimer’s disease.

Top gifts for those living with Dementia

Art and craft materials
Art improves memory and concentration and is extremely liberating for someone living with dementia. It’s also a dementia activity which you can all do together without conversation. Buy some paints, paper felt – tips or crayons or collage materials.

Digital calendar clock
The buttons are all clearly labelled to avoid confusion and the date and time appears in large bold letters which they can see the clock from across the room.

Small fish tank or a bird feeder
Setting up a small fish tank has proven to reduce depression for those living with dementia. Or buy a bird feeder and position it outside of their window that your loved one spends a lot of time near.

Family photo album
Any type of present that involves photos or memories is a perfect gift for your loved one especially those with more advanced dementia. You can sit together and share each photo. They may not remember names, but feelings ‘stick’. A photo album full of happy memories even if they can’t name everyone in their photos will make them smile.

Voice controlled alarm clock with reminders
A voice controlled alarm clock is a perfect gift. You can record a message every time they wake up reminding them what to do at that particular time. It’s a simple, hands-free solution to remind loved ones about medication, appointments and every-day tasks.

Digital photo frame
There are a wide variety of photo digital frames available. These digital photo frames are disguised as a photo frame and are a fantastic way to enjoy a slideshow of up-to-date pictures of family and friends and can even display their favourite picture or piece of art.

An automatic pill dispenser
This is a great little gadget and can be a life saver for families and those living with dementia. This dispenser has multiple compartments for each medication and is locked. Your loved one will not have access to their medication until the allocated time when the dispenser will sound an alarm and present the correct medication. Once taken, the dispenser will not issue any other medication until the next programmed time.

Blanket
This a perfect gift for those living with dementia especially for someone in the later stages of dementia as it is extremely comforting and can reduce anxiety and calm nerves.

Soft modelling clay
If your loved one loves using their hands then soft, non-toxic modelling clay or play-doh is proven to have a calming effect on those living with dementia and provides creative stimulation.

Dolls or stuffed animals
A doll our stuffed toy are considered to be therapy and provide great comfort and support for those living with dementia. Holding a stuffed animal or doll close to a loved one can bring back memories when they had children or pets of their own. They can also improve their mood and create a sense of purpose.

Wooden puzzles
Puzzles with large pieces are extremely therapeutic and are a great way for loved ones to improve their mental stimulation as they are proven to improve short-term memory and brain function. Buy or personalise a puzzle that will evoke memories.

Puzzle and colouring books
Brain stimulating activity or colouring books are excellent presents for loved ones to keep them entertained whilst improving their mental stimulation. There are a myriad of activity books designed by dementia specialists on the market.

Amazon Echo Alexa
An Alexa device is a hand free device which is voice-controlled. It has proven to improve the quality of life and improve independence for those living with dementia as they’re like virtual companions – perfect for those living on their own and instantly answer question such as “what time is it?”

“I love going to get my hair and nail done as it also helps me socialise which is so important for my mental health!”

Meet Janet, who is 56 years young. In her earlier years, she worked as a secretary and used to love ballroom dancing and embraced a social lifestyle.  Janet had a brain tumour removed approximately 30 years ago, resulting in short term deficiencies. Regrettably, the tumour resurfaced, prompting another operation for its removal.

Following her brain tumour, Janet started noticing she needed extra support at home as her short term memory got steadily worse and she required support to maintain her safety. She was also forgetting things such as turning the oven off, taking her medications at the correct time and was now at risk of falls due to her mobility getting worse.

Janet wanted to live as independently as possible at home, and so she contacted Novus Care to provide brain injury care within her own home.

After meeting Janet and talking through all the options, we matched Janet with Tolulope one of our live-in support workers. Her live in carer supports her to live independently and maintain a good routine and supports Janet with meal preparation, medication and companionship. Tolulope also  ensures she has regular hairdresser and manicure appointments as Tolulop understands how Janet enjoys going to these appointments as she loves to maintain her appearance plus its also a chance for Janet to socialise which is so important for her mental wellbeing.

At Novus Care, we provide care at home so our clients can continue to live an independent life. After all, we believe life is better at home. Stewart is one of our lovely clients who is cared for by our Canvey Island team. He turned to Novus Care for regular support as he is living with Autism and struggles to meet new people.

Kerry is one of Stewart’s regular carers and he really looks forward to her visits. As it was Halloween, Kerry decided to arrange a day out in Southend on Sea with Stewart to visit the Halloween Hall. They had a lovely day walking through the Halloween hall, looking at all the spooky decorations and then had a lovely lunch. Stewart and Kerry also walked around the garden centre and they both had a wonderful time and made some lasting memories.

Kerry has positively impacted Stewart’s well-being by providing much needed companionship and support. Receiving care at home has also allowed Stewart to live independently and be surrounded by his own home comforts.

Care in the home let’s you continue to live the life you want. You won’t be restricted to set mealtimes or visiting hours; you’ll have complete control over your life and the care you receive. We are here to support you at home to make your life a little easier, no matter what health care condition you are living with.

We can provide home care visits from just a 30 minute call to ensure all is well to 24/7 live in care. There are also many activities our Carers can help and support you with including gardening, visiting garden centres, shopping, going to your community centre or just going out for coffee.

At Novus Care, care isn’t just about supporting someone with day to day practicalities; it can be something as simple as popping in to have a chat over a cup of tea or taking someone out for a walk to go or to visit their best friend. This is exactly what our care team in Canvey Island did for their client Doreen who is living with Dementia.

Doreen is 85 years young and has been receiving care at home for over 3 years from Novus Care. We have been supporting Doreen and her husband Peter to ensure she continues to enjoy an independent, dignified life at home. Doreen has 4 visits per day from her carers and loves going out and about.

One afternoon, along with her husband Peter, her carers took her for an afternoon tea to their local Morrisons café. However just as they entered the café the fire alarm went off – luckily this was a false alarm and they all got to enjoy a lovely afternoon eating a wonderful selection of sandwiches, fruit scones, clotted cream, jam and cakes.

This is an example of how our home care services let you continue to live the life you want. A carer can make all the difference to someone’s life from someone just popping in once a day to ensure all is well to 24/7 live in care. We can support with helping you take your medication, housework or personal care through to cooking your favourite meals. Our fully regulated care service lets you continue living the life you want, on your terms.
